CONTEXT

The small project "Canteen Dai Lanh" was established as an appendix to the "Pre-schooling in rural areas" project. Many parents, because of their work, have to send their children to private canteens at noon. The hygiene in these cafeterias is usually questionable. This project was set up according to the Dai Lanh district's request.

OBJECTIVES :
  • Improve the children's health
  • To teach children good hygienic habits and encourage them to practice it at home
  • To sensitize parents on the catering of their children through canteen's visits
  • To reduce school dropouts
  • This canteen is also served as a resource centre for other pre-schools of the village

Intervention areas: Dai Lanh (Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa province). Dai Lanh is one of the three districts that is benefiting from the project "Pre-schooling in rural areas".

STRATEGY
  • Construction and operation of the canteen
  • Follow-up and evaluation the impacts of this canteen on children's scholastic work
  • Provision of balanced meals at lunchtime for proper nutrition of the children

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
  • This kind of small project had already been set up in the district of Van Thang. Since the results were positive and the parents were satisfied, the same approach was replicated in Dai Lanh district. Now the school is able to manage the cafeteria by itself. Parents also contribute 50% of the amount for the meal expenses
  • The construction of the cafeteria started in the summer of 2007
  • 70 children benefit from the cafeteria where the quality of meals is assured

NEXT STEPS
  • Find funds to assure the expenses and viability of the project in the long run
    Project duration: 3 years (2008-2010)
