In Laos, although the government has made a lot of efforts, the literacy rate remains one of the lowest in Southeast Asia. One of the reasons for this is the low quality of education. In this context, Aide et Action began to collaborate with the Lao Ministry of Education in June 2005, supporting the implementation of a pilot Project for a Structured Education in Laos (PESL). These activities aim at the improvement and management of pilot schools in two pilot provinces: Oudomxay (northern Laos) and Champassak (southern Laos).
OBJECTIVES
To train school headmasters on community involvement in education development
To promote reading promotion in pilot schools established with Aide et Action's partners
To establish pre-primary educational sites in pilot sites
Intervention areas: Oudomxay Province (North) and Champassak Province (South), Laos
STRATEGY
Aide et Action supports PESL implementation by providing:
A methodology and a «know-how», particularly concerning training, animation, capitalization and promotion of school
A technical expertise in the targeted fields: school project, school library, pre-school teaching, community mobilization
A regional presence which makes capitalization possible through experience-sharing processes
Through its principles of intervention and its vision, the project's final objective is the transfer of responsibility from Aide et Action to the Lao Ministry of Education
PARTNERS: Lao Ministry of Education, Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and Community Based Organization
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
In 2007, Aide et Action
Organized 3 Trainings (on library, use of preprimary curriculum, curriculum and early childhood education)
Trained 4 National trainers
Reached 24 Schools of 24 villages
Trained 120 teachers
Reached 3000 students
NEXT STEPS
Until 2007, Aide et Action had been working in these two pilot provinces of Laos, together with the local educational authorities. Results are very positive. Now we need more funds in order to extend the project, and make other provinces benefit from our experiences. Project duration: 3 years (2008-2010)
