In the heart of the Indochinese peninsula and completely landlocked, Laos cover a surface area of 236,800 sq. km. (about the size of the United Kingdom) and extends 1,700 km from north to south. Mountains, plateaus and rivers occupy more than 70 percent of the land. The mighty Mekong River cuts across the whole length of Laos. Most of the arable land is located along the course of the river, along with the most concentrated population.
