CONTEXT

In China, rapid development pushes families from rural areas into urban areas where they can find better paying jobs. However once there, most suffer from administrative and societal discrimination. As a result, the children of these migrants are excluded from the public education system. They are placed in the middle of a cultural conflict which prevents them from learning effectively. The relationship between parents and children may in this case become very strained, which will subsequently impact their earlier socialization and obstacle their integration into the city.

OBJECTIVES
  • To support migrant families and improve their education level
  • To contribute to the improving of communication and interactivity between parents and children, in order to provide the latter a more fulfilling family environment
  • To set up an atmosphere, both in school and in society, which will facilitate migrant families' integration into urban life

Intervention area: Chengdu city, Sichuan province

STRATEGY
  • Research-action activities in partnership with the Sichuan Province Academy of Social Science
  • Project implementation by local NGOs and volunteers through Multilateral Participatory Training-Action in pilot schools. This includes student activities, parent training and school and teacher trainings

PARTNERS: Sichuan province Academy of Social Science and Community Base Organization

  • 8 migrants children schools got involved in the project
  • 2100 parents were trained
  • 3900 students participated in the activities
  • 30 teachers were trained
  • 65 volunteers were trained

NEXT STEPS
New families are still migrating to cities, and are always in transit. A preliminary study found that there were about 20 million migrant children in China. This alarming high number requires the development of new, adaptive and efficient action models/tools. Accordingly, additional funds are required to keep developing the project.
Project duration: 1 year (2008)
