Home China earthquake emergency: support AeA's relief intervention
Where we work
CONTEXT
On Monday, May 12, at 2.28 p.m. Beijing time, a major earthquake, measuring 8 on the Richter scale, jolted China's Sichuan Province.
Latest data report from XINHUANET news, dated 09/07/2008 12PM:
Deceased: 69,197
Injured: 374,176
Missing: 18,379
The Chinese authorities are now implementing its long-term recovery and reconstruction strategy to face the economic, social and environmental consequences of the earthquake. It also remains of upmost importance to develop educational and counseling activities in support of victims and displaced populations.
Aide et Action’s latest field survey of schools affected by the earthquake concluded:
Material aid for reconstruction was needed
There was a need for child day care during the summer holiday while parents dealt with reconstruction issues
There is a lack of basic facilities and supplies for local teachers
STRATEGY
Aide et Action is basing its relief strategy on providing psycho-social support to the victims and victims’ families, through volunteer coordination, school rehabilitation and psychological assistance.
This project aims to assist affected schools by offering support and counseling to both teachers under pressure, and students who need special care as the memory of the earthquake is still very fresh. Parents also rely on schools and teachers for day care for their children, in particular during the holidays, while they are busy rebuilding their homes and livelihoods.
Volunteer teacher trainings: since June 1rst, three rounds of trainings have been conducted, resulting in 65 volunteers, mainly university students, trained. Indeed, teachers on the field are often inexperienced and untrained in post-disaster teaching and counseling. The trainings are in two parts:
School management in the context of a disaster: background, participatory work tools, and management principles
Psychological assistance in a disaster-struck school: principles of psychological counseling
Volunteer teacher placement: : Aide et Action has trained and sent 18 voluntary teachers in 5 temporary schools.

The Summer Camp programmes welcome children from affected areas during 6 weeks and offer various activities including: music, arts and craft, plays, reading, etc. All activities are part of a weekly theme. The curriculum is designed to allow children to express their feelings and develop self-support and resilience mechanisms for dealing with the changes brought into their lives by the earthquake.
Material support: Aide et Action is providing some materials to improve the educational context, including books, stationary, canteen equipment, eco-toilets, various hardware, etc. Fifty-five electric fans have already been distributed to schools. In the long-term, using experts in the field, a Handbook on School Preparedness to Disasters will also be developed.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED
Aide et Action has accumulated experience in developing emergency response interventions during natural disasters such as cyclone "Jeanne" which hit Haiti in September 2004, and the tsunami which affected India and Sri Lanka in December 2004.
Once again, we are appealing to your generous support to allow our rehabilitation activities to take place for the populations affected by the May 12th 2008 earthquake.
Please donate generously to support the earthquake-hit populations of China.
